It has come to our attention that there is some confusion concerning our end of life announcement for PHP4 and RV Site Builder, so we wanted to clarify.
RV Site Builder:
This is software available through the control panel to build your own website. If your site was designed by Scarlet's Web, this doesn't apply to you. Only Do-It-Yourselfers who actively chose the RV Site Builder button in their control panels would be impacted by this. If you are, your site WILL continue to work, however, you won't be able to edit it in that interface after June 30, 2011. This decision was based on several factors, including the release of our own custom CMS system and the ongoing issues/bugs with the RV Site Builder software.
PHP4:
PHP4 is a version of the PHP programming language that has actually been outdated for quite a while. PHP5 was released in 2004 and since 2008 has been the only version under development. We keep our PHP5 version on the machines up to date with the latest stable releases. PHP4 ceased development once PHP5 was released. As a courtesy, we have offered both versions of the software on the machines for the past three years. With PHP4 being obsolete, it carries a certain security risk to keep offering it, which is one of the reasons behind our decision to remove it by the end of the year.
So, how can you tell if this will affect your site?
PHP is used for interactive/dynamic web content, including things like shopping carts, database integration, and other third party scripts that you may have purchased and installed on your site. If you have PHP programming that has not been updated in four years or longer, this may apply to you.
Log into your cpanel and under the "Software Services" group, select "PHP Version". After "The ".php" file extension will be processed by" if you have "System Default" or "PHP5", this doesn't apply to you. If you have "PHP4", then most likely you will be impacted.
If you ARE impacted, usually upgrading your coding or program will be sufficient to fix the issue. Usually, the upgrades are very minor.
We hope this clarifies the issue for you. If you still have questions, please feel free to open a ticket at the help desk.
Thank you,
